Ranbir Singh Pura is a town and a notified area committee in Jammu district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Geography

Ranbir Singh Pura is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 270 metres (886 feet). Ranbir singh Pura is one of the most progressive tehsil of Jammu District. The main economic activity of the R S Pura is agriculture and dairy farming. Rice (Basmati) and wheat are major crops while mustard, berseem and vegetables are also grown. Rakh area of Badyal Brahmana and Arnia are very famous for vegetable farming. R.S.Pura has many rice mills for the processing of high quality basmati rice. The main tourist destination is Grahana Wetland, where migratory birds from temprate zone of asia comes to enjoy this beautiful landscape. The main town is a complete in itself to fulfill all needs of daily life likewise departmental stores, garments showrooms, sweets & confectionary, fresh fruits and vegetable open market. Apart from these healthcare services, post office, nationalised banks (JKB,SBI, PNB,PSB, HDFC etc) and other financial institution are also present. The major Educational institutions of R. S. Pura are SKUAST-Veterinary College, Govt. Degree College, Govt. Higher Sec School and many high schools.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Ranbir Singh Pura had a population of 13,563. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Ranbir Singh Pura has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 63%. In Ranbir Singh Pura, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. The famous personalities of R S Pura includes Naib Subedar Bana Singh P.V.C. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry medal in India and Er. Rajinder Singh Chib, VSM, he qualified B.E. (Electronics) from BITS, Pilani (Rajasthan), Post Graduation in Industrial Management from IISC, Bangalore. He was Commissioned in the INDIAN AIR FORCE in 1963 as Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) and served for 20 years in various capacities, including: Asstt. Director, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India; Secretary, Defence Services Officers Institute, New Delhi. Awarded VISHIST SEVA MEDAL by the President of India. Inducted as Cabinet Minister in J&K Government in 1986 and worked in different portfolios viz. Forest, Tourism and Health & Medical Education.
